Questions, Asked and Answered

How many miles have you ridden?

Counting only "ride every road" rides, I've ridden 3,670.7 mi, as of Jaunuary 15, 2014.

How large is St Louis?

St Louis has 61.9 square miles of land, making it slightly larger than Liechtenstein.

For scale, this is a little over 2.5 times the size of Manhattan (22.9 sq mi), 1.3 times the size of Boston or San Francisco (˜48 sq mi), 0.8 times the size of Cleveland (77.7 sq mi), around half the size of Atlanta or the Gaza Strip (˜135 sq mi), and almost exactly the size of Washington DC (61.4 sq mi).

Wolfram Alpha also tells me that it is "1.2 times the size of an adult male cougar's home range".

How many miles are there in St Louis City?

Mary at the STL street department tells me that there are 1,100 miles of paved street in town, and around 600 miles of alleys.

Wolfram alpha tells me that's very close to equal to the radius of the moon.

A very fit cyclist on....

When did you start this project?

My first ride was on March 28th, 2012. I rode from St Louis' highest point (Arsenal and Sublette) to St Louis' lowest point (River Des Peres and the Mississippi River).

What's your equipment setup?

Primary bike is an All-City "Mr Pink" 55cm frame. 105/Ultegra, Mavic Open Pro wheels laced to Ultegra. 28c Conti Gatorskin tires. Altogether a great rig, in my opinon, for trying something like this.

Snow/Railroad bike is an unbranded Stout SE knockoff aluminum 29er; it was a single-speed but got converted to a 1×8.

What software/hardware/services did you use to plan and record routes.

I used a Garmin Edge 500 to record routes, which I saved to Strava. I used RideWithGPS to plan routes, and then used an Android phone using OsmAND to give turn-by-turn directions.
