Here's a very handsome map of the Sante Fe Railway route by Rand McNally
I'm afraid that I'm not all that knowledgeable, past the very basics, of our country's rail history. The best we can hope for is that some benevolent Railfans find my pages and leave some helpful comments. I'd be curious to learn more.

















The map appears to be based on the routes served by the AT&SF (Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe) railroad company, which originally built the first service route between the Kansas City area and New Mexico. Thus the density of spur lines in Kansas. As you can see, they later expanded, though the lines in California shown are actually a portion of the Southern Pacific’s network (they probably had some sort of passenger-sharing agreement to extend service to California; Southern Pacific was a Sacramento-based company which controlled most of the rails in California and Nevada).
