This birdseye map of Mattoon, Illinois [gmap] is the only credited work that J.W. Smith produced for Shober & Carqueville (or indeed for anyone, as far as I can tell), and it is a beautiful work.

Mattoon is perhaps most famous for having concoted Mad Gasser of Mattoon, a notable occurrence of runaway mass hysteria, that I'm sure I'd hate people bringing up if I was from Mattoon, Illinois; so I'm conflicted about mentioning it, but I feel like I must.
