A handsome, if conservative, example of the "ribbon map" style of illustration that was quite frequently used to illustrate the Mississippi River from St. Louis to New Orleans.
The Minnesota to St. Louis stretch was rarely ever given the same treatment. Possibly because it was -- before construction of locks and dams -- quite less trafficked. Other factors played into that as well, no doubt.
