Far from pretty, but better than most "jam some factoids in text and put it on a map" offenders (I'm looking at you, Mother Nature Network).
How? Well this one at least has the benefit of having the same statistics across the board. So it has the plausible excuse of using the spatial relationships of the states bring such data in closer visual range than would an alphabetical table.
And you really have to tip your hat for the novel way it addresses the whole New England log-jam. It just
says "fuck you, I guess this isn't the map for you, sorry" puts their stats into a handsome table at the lower-left.
