I'm a big fan of this Julius Bien map of Yonkers, New York [gmap]. It uses pretty standard fire insurance map symbology, but it's at a much smaller scale than one would usually find. Its overall effect is a pleasing one, and the map's color provides a pretty striking composition.
Also, many, many years ago my buddy Steve and I had some sort of joke that centered around the film Lost in Yonkers that some network executive must've thought was, like, the second coming for as much as they advertized it and played it. I can't, for the life of me, remember anything about what that joke was, though. Steve, hit me up if you remember.

Most of the Nepperhan River is now underground. The lower stretch of the Nepperhan along Dock Street is undergoing a daylighting project now.
Also note the Otis Elevator works. Mr. Otis is now buried in Oakland Cemetery, at the top of the map.
