This map is part of a series depicting the 40 largest cities in the United States (as ranked by CBSA). This series will run through the month of July.
Had to dig deep to find this street map of Indianapolis, Indiana [gmap].
Interesting, perhaps, because of its age. Unlovely in other regards. Indianapolis: I know you must have some great maps. Please send them to me.
For more map resources and imagery from this period in Indianapolis's history, check out the Indiana Historical Society's website.

I think this map may be older than the 1902 publish date. I recently discovered a book of old city ordinances that include street name changes and found that many of the street names on this map were changed in 1896. For example, two streets off Brookside: Omer became East Eleventh and Stoughton became East Twelfth, both in 1896. Here’s the book online at Google Play:
The General Ordinances of the City of Indianapolis
(I can’t post the link, sorry…)
Would you happen to know how to find the origin of the street name for McCarty street? It runs E-W just south of downtown and runs parallel to and just above I-70? My email is tbdsmrc@gmail.com
I would be interested in purchasing the 1902 Indianapolis map if it is available. What is the price and what would be the size of the print?
Thanks
John P.
Thanks for posting this old map of Indy! I have been struggling with some old street names from the 1890’s. Your map help me figure out the ‘new’ names. Many thanks and kind regards, Barb L.
Can I buy the Indianapoils map how big
I’d love to get a copy of this map as a fun “addon” for a project I’m working on for the Midtown area! Take a look at http://midtownloveslocal.org/search – it’s under development but I would love to have this as a “layer” that can be turned on for fun. Also working on getting permission from these guys http://www.naplab.net/ to use their map as an alternate look as well.
I love a good georectified old map/new map mashup. Would love to see it once you get it done; if you’d like to, shoot me an email when you do.
