Here is Guillaume Delisle's map of the Mississippi valley, and the land that would become the Louisiana Purchase.

Love this map. You have the lovingly rendered minor-rivers of the gulf coast and of Southeast Texas; the lush primacy of the mouth of the Mississippi, and then past that? It's got a real Thar Be Dragons feel to it that just makes me want to go explore it. Anything northwest of Shreveport is just this single, desolate hill, repeating to infinity... which in the case of Cherry County [gmap], Nebraska, might be entirely factually accurate – one day somebody should finally go there and check it out.
