I'm not an art scholar, but boy did it seem like the French really liked watercolors (is that even watercolor? What is it that I'm calling "watercolor", here?). This beautiful map by Jean Baptiste Genevieve Marcellin is a great example.
Good composition, good colors. I don't ever use "zen-like" in an unqualified way to describe anything, because I don't understand it well. But this looks like my western, dime-store, notional concepts of "zen-like" simplicity.
Réunion [gmap] is an island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Madagascar. It's inhabited by just under a million people. It's classified as an département d’outre-mer ("overseas department") of France, along with: French Guiana [gmap], Guadeloupe [gmap], Martinique [gmap], and Mayotte [gmap].
