Very nice Fowler print of Altoona, Pennsylvania [gmap] centered on the town's railroad yard.
Altoona, I'm finding, was actually founded by the Penn. R.R. expressly for the production of this railroad yard.
This is so well-done, it's probably gonna be some railfan's favorite. I hope one of them can fill me in on the significance of the Altoona rail yard.
Real pleasing depiction of steam and smoke. It's funny: in illustrations of the time steam and smoke meant “progress”, “industry”, “vitality”; but to 21st century eyes the sight of all those wisps of smoke saturating the nearby houses just screams “silicosis.”
