Birdseye map of Salem,[google map] the State Capital of Oregon, by Eli Glover -- notable as one of only a handful of birdseye map illustrators to work in the American West.
Salem was founded as a Methodist mission on the Willamette River in 1840; when Glover drew this image in 1876 its population was around 2,500, and in the years since the town has grown steadily to its current size of 155,000 [Est., 2009]. More resources about this period is Salem's history are available at the Marion County Historical Society.
